Cloudflare complements application security
A WAF can filter matching requests but cannot fix vulnerable application code or a stolen administrator account. Full (Strict) protects the visitor-to-Cloudflare and Cloudflare-to-origin connections; Cloudflare terminates TLS to process traffic. Proxying DNS does not by itself restrict direct origin access. Origin firewall changes, paid features and application fixes must be assessed separately.
Separate edge controls from origin security
Cloudflare controls at the edge complement application and origin-server work. Identify public pages, authenticated sessions, checkout, APIs and legitimate automated clients before changing proxy, cache or WAF settings.
- Map proxied hosts and origin access.
- Choose narrow rules and known-good requests.
- Test customers, callbacks and blocked examples.
- Document rule purpose and disable procedure.
What WAF, cache and challenges do not replace
Features depend on the actual account plan. Every enabled rule needs a purpose, verification result and remaining origin risk. DNS migration, application cleanup and paid subscriptions need explicit scope; no setting promises universal attack blocking.
| Control | Check | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| WAF | Relevant requests handled as intended | Not an application patch |
| Cache | Private responses stay private | Requires cookie and route review |
| Challenge | Customers and integrations still work | May interrupt callbacks |
Example: a payment callback blocked by a challenge
A challenge blocks a payment callback. Review the exact path and provider requirements, adjust the authorized rule and repeat payment-status checks instead of removing protection globally. This is an illustrative scenario, not a customer case or a promised result.
