Hardening and ongoing server management
Hardening reduces unnecessary exposure through configuration and access changes. Ongoing management adds recurring updates, checks and operational work. A Linux VPS remains dependent on its host and applications; a one-time configuration is not continuous incident monitoring. We agree who handles alerts and what happens if the server becomes unreachable before making access changes.
Harden Linux without losing recovery access
Inventory operating-system support, administration paths, exposed services, jobs, backups and provider rescue access. SSH and firewall changes can lock out maintainers unless a usable recovery route is confirmed first.
- Confirm permitted access and provider recovery.
- Review exposure, privileges and updates.
- Apply approved changes in a controlled window.
- Retest administration, website and scheduled jobs.
Server access, exposure and update checks
Deliver a change summary and outstanding risks. Unsupported systems, disk pressure and legacy applications may require separate repair or migration. A Linux review does not automatically include code review, continuous monitoring or SOC coverage.
| Area | Evidence | Dependency |
|---|---|---|
| Administration | Authorized access works afterward | Recovery console |
| Network | Required services remain reachable | Integration requirements |
| Updates | Changes and restart effects recorded | Application compatibility |
Example: verify recovery before changing SSH
Before restricting SSH, an authorized recovery path and another administration session are checked. The handover records the resulting access method without credentials. This is an illustrative scenario, not a customer case or a promised result.
